Student Projects:
When classes visit the Library Media Center, finding books and magazines to take out is only one of the activities taking place during their 45 minutes. We discuss stories, learn about how the library is set up, learn about the different types of genre and about parts of a book (table of contents, index, etc.) and how the parts can help us in researching things, and we often work on projects incorporating many of the Common Core Standards & 21st century skills required for educating our students for the future. Below are some sample projects created by students in their Library Media classes with Mrs. Noon.
Student Website Projects:
Seventh and eighth grade students working in small groups were asked to research a topic of their choice and then to plan & develop a public website about the topic. This was their first experience at creating a website.
Fourth Grade Candia Projects:
Researching Candia's past and present has been part of the 4th grade studies for several years now. Some of their final products are highlighted below.
Fourth Grade book about Candia:
Candia: Then & Now
This was a cooperative project by the Unified Arts Team and the fourth grade classroom teachers at the school. Curriculum areas integrated into this project were Language Arts, Music, Art, Health, Physical Education, Social Studies, Technology, Information Literacy, & Writing. In the Media Center, students researched information about Candia using books, pamphlets, the internet, and materials supplied by the Fitts Museum. Note-taking and research techniques were learned to gather the information and then create original paragraphs for the book. Photographs and student artwork were then added to the paragraphs and the book was put together using Bookemon.com. Copies of Candia: Then & Now can be found in the Smyth Library, the Fitts Museum & the Moore School Library. Several community members bought copies of the book as well. It is still available for purchase at the site. If you would like to read the book online click on the green button below.
Fourth grade calendars:
Candia Calendar
Another cooperative UA fourth grade project was having each fourth grade classroom create a calendar featuring past & present information students researched and student artwork of Candia. These calendars were made available to the public for purchase. Copies were also donated to the Fitts Museum.
Fourth Grade Time Capsule & Book Project:
This year, Mrs. Noon and Mrs. Lindsey have been collaborating on a project with fourth grade students to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Candia. Students are putting together a time capsule which will include samples of things students believe will be interesting for future citizens to discover when the capsule is opened and letters written by them to future fourth graders. The students have also written paragraphs about what they love about Candia. These writings will be shared with the public in a book to be published. Copies of the book will be given to the Smyth Library and the Fitts Museum. When the book is published a digital copy will be featured here.
